Sizes of Cine Film Reels

3" Cine Film

A 3" cine reel typically holds around 50 feet of film, giving about 3–4 minutes of footage. It’s the smallest size of cine reel, usually measuring around 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter. These reels were often used for short home clips such as birthdays or holidays. If your reel fits easily into the palm of your hand, it’s likely a 3" reel.

5" Cine Film

A 5" cine reel holds around 200 feet of film, giving approximately 13–15 minutes of recording time. Measuring about 12.5 cm (5 inches) across, these were commonly used for longer family events or holiday footage. If your reel is roughly the size of a small dessert plate, it’s probably a 5" reel.

7" Cine Film

The 7" cine reel is the largest common home movie reel, holding around 400 feet of film—that’s roughly 26–30 minutes of footage. With a diameter of about 18 cm (7 inches), these reels were typically used for full holiday reels or combined family footage. If your reel is about the size of a dinner plate, you’re looking at a 7" cine film.
